Roots of Light… Photography’s Journey Through History
The Mysterious Beginnings – From Camera Obscura to the First Permanent Photograph
Photography was not born in a single moment but is the product of centuries of discoveries and experiments. Its roots trace back to ancient times with the concept of the “Camera Obscura,” a darkened room allowing light to pass through a small aperture to project an inverted image of the outside world onto an internal surface. Artists and scientists used this principle for centuries as a tool for drawing and observation, but the greatest challenge lay in how to permanently fix this image.
The pivotal moment arrived in the mid-1820s when the French inventor Joseph Nicéphore Niépce succeeded in capturing the first permanent photographic image in history in 1826 or 1827, known as “View from the Window at Le Gras.” This image required many hours of exposure to light and was very primitive, but it opened the door to a visual revolution no one could have imagined.
Niépce’s assistant, Louis Daguerre, continued to develop the process, introducing the world in 1839 to the “Daguerreotype,” the first commercially viable photographic process. The Daguerreotype required only minutes of exposure and produced clear, detailed images with astonishing precision. The year 1839 is generally considered the birth year of practical photography.
The Daguerreotype’s dominance did not last long, as it soon faced competition from the “calotype” process and “salt print” processes invented by William Fox Talbot. These subsequent innovations made photography easier and more versatile, reduced the required exposure time, and made photographic media more economical, sensitive, and convenient.

In the 1850s, the “Collodion” process combined the high quality of the Daguerreotype with multiple printing options, making it widely used for decades.
